One sunny day earlier this month, I was entertained by several finches enjoying the sun and the water in the bird bath.

They were flapping their wings and splashing water on themselves and each other like it was the last they would see….just really enjoying themselves. I don’t mind washing dishes when I can be entertained at the same time!

Fall Quilt Show in Aurora

Fall is in the air…it’s a good time to visit the Willamette Valley! There are many ways to get a “taste” of our bountiful valley. Many fruit and vegetable stands and markets are overflowing with wonderful produce and many of our restaurants are featuring locally grown produce. Aurora’s annual quilt show is another way to get a “taste” of local history and art.

Aurora Colony Museum will be displaying vintage, antique and new quilts in its quilt show “Bountiful Oregon” from October 14th to 23rd from 10 to 4:00 daily. Visitors will be able to see quilts, demos, and a featured quilter, shop in the country store, and enjoy the coffee shop all in one visit!

Here and There Around the Farm

We have added four new feathered friends to our chicken coop! Guests will be happy that we now have enough for them to have farm fresh eggs for breakfast.

Our community garden is rewarding us with lots of veggies to share with members as well as adding to our breakfast dishes. The goats love it when we have extra for them too!

Two weeks ago we had two new baby goats born so there is plenty of frolicking going on in the pen.

Can’t forget Kitty….she lives outside and is always the first to greet our guests.

The Dahlias are Blooming!

Swan Island Dahlias in Canby, Oregon is the largest and leading dahlia grower in America with over 40 acres and 350 varieties of dahlias.

It has been a family owned business since 1927 and is celebrating their 84th season. Visitors can walk through the sea of color free of charge. The annual Dahlia Festival is held on August 27, 28, and 29 and September 3, 4, and 5 this year. It features indoor displays as well as the display gardens. During the festival, guests can have lunch or snacks from one of the many vendors.

Discover historic Butteville

Looking for something fun to do this summer? Why not take a little trip to Butteville and step back in time. The Historic Butteville Store, established in 1863 and operated by the Friends of Historic Champoeg, is the oldest continuously-operating business in Oregon.

Play a game of checkers and have an ice cold drink or ice cream cone. The store also features delicious homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, and desserts, and on Saturday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 you can enjoy live music and dinner (reservations are required.)

The Willamette Valley….a gardeners paradise

If you are a gardener, or even if you aren’t and just enjoy beautiful flowers, you will enjoy the Willamette Valley in spring and summer. Beginning with daffodils in early spring and continuing into the fall, many gardens and nurseries are open for visitors’ enjoyment. Currently, peonies and irises are in abundance here in the valley.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips Compliments of the Feller House!

Join us here in the North Willamette Valley for the arrival of spring. Daffodils are in full bloom and tulip blossoms are emerging at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm with 40 acres of color at their height.

Owners say about 5% color is showing in the fields as of this opening day, March 25th, so there is plenty of time to plan your trip to enjoy the festivities that continue through May 1st. There is plenty to see and do at Wooden Shoe from demonstrations of wooden shoe making to farm equipment displays, crafters market and plenty of food to enjoy.

Almost Spring Again

Always at this time of year when the kid goats start showing up and the daffodils shoot up and buds swell, I am encouraged and feel an excitement for all the things that will be full of new life this spring.

The hellebores are almost in bloom, violets are showing their beautiful blue color and the buds are swelling on the flowering cherry outside my kitchen window. We have had ten new little goats born in the last week and already they are jumping, playing and making lots of noise.

Our Gardening Adventure of 2010

Having heard so much about community gardens and visited a successful one last year, we decided to start one here at the Feller House this season. We wanted it to be cross-generational and cross-cultural. It evolved to include seven families with three generations and what fun it was!

Folks came every Tuesday evening with hoe and potluck dishes in hand to share in the work and bounty of the garden. After greeting each other, the white board was checked for chores to be done and produce to be harvested. A number of children as well as adults shared time together in the garden, then it was time to bring out the many dishes of food to share. Eating together turned out to be a highlight of the summer as we made homemade ice cream, cooked big pots of corn and shared cross-cultural foods with as many as 25 gardeners. Much laughter, story telling and digging in the dirt together made for a memorable experience….and we’re sure to do it again next year!
